The number of people who have fallen for visa scams in Nigeria is alarming. The sad fact is that more people will continue to fall because more Nigerians than ever are looking to escape to other countries, while at the same time, the scammers are getting better at their game.

Fortunately, there are some easy ways of finding out if you are about to fall victim and how to avoid visa scams in Nigeria.

Top Tips to Avoid Visa Scams in Nigeria

1. Tune down the desperation

A majority of those scammed when they try to migrate from Nigeria fall victim because of desperation. It blinds you from seeing all the red flags until you fall completely.

It is a great experience to see that your dreams of leaving are finally coming true, but most importantly, keep your emotions and eagerness in check. Do not rush things, and don’t allow yourself to be too desperate.

2. Research before you begin the process

Understanding what you are about to do and all that it entails will keep you in a safe zone. Know the type of visa you require, the process involved, and the requirements. Those who fall prey to waiting visa scammers do not understand what they are getting into, making them an easy target.

3. When the promises are too good to be true, it is because it is not true

When agents begin to make unreasonable promises and assurances, including assured visas, it is most likely that they are trying to scam you. A majority of the promises they make are all in an attempt to get you to part with your money.

More so, no one can assure you of securing a visa to any country, as it all depends on your eligibility.

4. Ask the right questions

One important tip that will help you not to get scammed is to know the right questions and ask them. While genuine agents will give you all the necessary answers, including how they will go through the process, the routes to secure the visa, and the timeline.

If they are unable to give you straightforward answers to simple questions, you may be about to get scammed.

5. Know your travel agent

Knowing your agent is one of the best ways to avoid getting scammed. You need to know his physical office address, and if possible, meet him in person. As much as possible, you may want to avoid those who are only active on social media.

Apart from knowing the agent, the package they offer, and the means of payment, also has a lot to say. For example, if the packages are very cheap and the agent wants full payment upfront, you may need to start having your doubts.

6. Unethical behavior is also a serious red flag

If you find yourself having to deal with an agent who is encouraging you into unethical behaviors, such as lying during your application and visa interview, this is a red flag.

Scam agents may also encourage you to pay them to forge documents for you. Not only is this a scam, but it can get you into trouble and make it difficult for you to leave the country in the future.

7. Do not be pressured

Pressure tactics are other ways that visa scammers use to nail the coffin of their victims. They try to make you feel you are almost out of time, and you need to make payments as soon as possible. No matter the situation, do not fall for this gimmick.

Carry out your due diligence without skipping a step, as the pressure they try to put on you is so that you do not follow every step.

8. Trust your instinct

One of the most important things that people take for granted is their intuition. The moment you get the feeling that you are about to be scammed, it is because you are actually about to be scammed.

When dealing with a visa agent and you have that off feeling about it, the best thing to do is to leave and find another.

9. Consider doing it yourself (DIY)

Yet another important thing that most people do not realize is that you can apply for a visa and go through the entire process on your own without having to use any agent.

There are many resources on platforms such as YouTube, Japacompass, and many other sites where you can get the detailed process of how to go about it.
